Recap

A big effort from the Hunslet Hawks saw them sail into the next round of the Challenge Cup after beating the Oldham Roughyeds 36-10 in front of the home crowd.Coach Barry Eaton named a strong Hawks team with Callum Windley, Stuart Kain and Aston Wilson earning themselves a place in the squad. The home side crossed the whitewash with just 4 minutes on the clock, encouraged by David March’s efforts. The skipper was caught short before a great pass on the following play was enough to send Tommy Haughey over; maintaining his good form after last week’s impressive hat trick.

The Hawks were struggling when defending the Roughyeds kicking game and a chip under the posts was claimed by Jamie Dallimore as the defence were left standing. Dallimore converted his own and pushed Oldham in front.

Despite this small setback the next 20 minutes belonged to the Hawks as the half backs played with confidence; Windleys first touch on the ball was a great one setting up Grimshaw who communicated well with Haughey and left it late before tipping it behind him to Welham. The home sides rally didn’t cool as Helliwell broke through the line and gave a ball to March, who drew the defenders before putting Aston Wilson away. The powerful new addition to the backs brought it to the line before giving it to Mapals to finish things off in the corner in an outstanding team effort.

Steve Lewis claimed his first of the season before the break, the forward powered onto a pass and slid over just in time. Helliwell supported his side with the conversion rate as he slotted the third to make it 22-6.

There was little room for mistakes from the Oldham side and a penalty in the Hunslet half was bad news. Welham raced onto March’s pinpoint kick and scored his second. An almost identical try five minutes later but this time it was Helliwell who got there first.

The Hawks forwards had worked tirelessly with Yates and Menzies both providing the fight the team needed. Liam Welham then completed his hat trick as the centre progressed on his outstanding form and cut open the defensive line to touch down adding to his increasing score tally.

The Roughyeds fought back and stole the opportunity to cross for a consolation try but as the final whistle blew the Hawks had earned themselves a place in the next round with a comfortable 36-10 victory over the Lancashire side.
