Recap
The Hawks were left shocked after their trip to Cumbria saw them travel home with the not even a bonus point. Workington stormed the second half and earned themselves a 32-18 win over the Hawks.
The first half had been a much different story as Barry’s boys looked up for the game and with Grimshaw missing scrum half Helliwell stood up to his responsibilities and ran the show. Setting up the first try was a massive effort from Michael Haley before a spiralling pass to Jamel Chisolm who was happy to sprint the full length unopposed and score his first of the season. The boys continued in much the same style for the opening 20 minutes with flawless sets but when the visitors failed to produce the goods from the penalty ex Hawk Jamie Thackery powered over under the sticks. The game turned into a rally as Hunslet skipper David March latched onto a Liam Hood pass and burrowed across. The moment was short lived as they were left defending from the restart as Hunslet came up with another error. This time hooker Graeme Mattinson sliced open the line to push Town level. It was going to be a high scoring game as the Hawks had possession before the break and looked guaranteed to be across a run from Keinhorst saw him almost break free Yatesy and Singleton followed but Helliwell this time touched down for his own. Converting it aswell he had pushed the boys into a crucial advantage for half time.
Hopes for a quiet second half had disappeared almost immediately as full back Brett Carter scored the opening try down the touchline; Workington missed with the conversion and Hunslet held on to a small lead. As the official shouted the tackle count over the Hawks were left standing as Jordan Wain put the ball over the line on the next play. A dubious decision that had put the home side infront wasn’t going to help the Hawks. Poor discipline and missed tackles were the only thing left to blame as Karl Olstrum battered them down the middle and slid over the whitewash making the fight back even more doubtful. Workington rubbed salt in the wounds in the final moments of the game as Kayle Connor scored on the hooter and pushed even the bonus point out of reach with a final score of 32-18.
An awful second half display, the Hawks looked nothing like the team of recent weeks. There had been signs of some inventive play and spells of good defence but if the Hawks are going to fight for playoffs and a shot in the Northern Rail they are going to have to make improvements soon. A week off next week before another trip to Cumbria to face Workington the following Sunday in the cup with hopefully a more favourable result.
