As Hunslet’s progress in 1908 continued, they had the opportunity to further their quest for more silverware to add to the Yorkshire Cup and League. At Wigan, they faced Broughton Rangers in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup. Both sides were at full strength and it is reported that Hunslet arrived in Wigan early so the players could have an hour or two in bed before the game! 16,000 saw the game start with more than the usual long kicking. Broughton were the first to score with a penalty goal. Seven minutes later Hunslet took the lead with a Farrar try. The second half saw the Terrible Six at their best as they “went with torrent-like raids” at Broughton. Broughton did get the chance to re-take the lead but a penalty shot hit the upright and that was pretty much the end of their resistance. Fred Smith scored a converted try, followed by an Albert Goldthorpe drop goal which, it was announced, was his 800th goal for the club. Billy Batten and a second for Fred Smith completed the scoring and Hunslet were in the Final.
Hunslet’s 1897/98 league season ended today – Hunslet needed to beat Liversedge and rely on Bradford losing to Brighouse today or Wakefield on Tuesday to finish top of the table. Hunslet did their part winning 41-0 but Bradford scored a very late try to secure a 3-2 win at Brighouse and then beat Wakefield 12-6. The teams were tied at the top of the table and the League Committee later decided a Play-off would be held to determine the champions. Albert Goldthorpe’s 6 goals and 15 points in the game equalled previous match records and 41-0 was the highest score against senior opposition to date.
The 1886/87 season had also ended today, Hunslet winning 12 and drawing 4 of their Club Matches. Isaac Summerhill topped both tries and goals with six of each.
The 1941/42 War Emergency League came to a conclusion as Hunslet finished 5th out of 17 with 10 wins from 18 games. The Challenge Cup was to come so top scorers had not yet been determined.
In 1956 hooker Sam Smith was on international duty at Odsal as Great Britain took on France. The home side triumphed 18-10.
