Today has been a day for our players to try to convince the selectors they were worthy of a place on the ship or plane to the Antipodes.
In 1946, two of our forwards, Sam Newbound and Des Clarkson, were selected for Great Britain Colours in the second Tour Trial at Headingley. Clarkson kicked a goal against Great Britain Whites as the Whites won 18-14.

The 1920s were a lean time for Hunslet’s players gaining representative recognition, but in 1924 Herbert “Hector” Crowther was called up to play for Great Britain Whites in the Tour Trial at Wigan. The Whites thumped the Reds 38-15 with Hector scoring a try. Unfortunately, none of the three were deemed suitable for a Lions Jersey and got to spend the summer at their day jobs.
1892, and the Goldthorpe brothers, Walter and Albert played for Yorkshire against the Rest Of England. Yorkshire won 4-0 but neither of the Hunslet players scored. The match was billed as “The Great Match” and was a challenge match played by the County Champions against a side representing the rest of country. It was played at Headingley.
