In 1907/08 Hunslet had won all four cups on offer. The feat was repeated a few years late by Huddersfield and in 1928 Swinton were on the cusp of joining this elite club. Today was the semi-final of the Championship Play-offs and having finished top of the league they welcomed the 4th placed club – Hunslet. Swinton were depleted by having three tourists on the boat to Australia and as Hunslet had been in the top four most of the season must have hoped they could end Swinton’s ambitions. A crowd of 12,000 saw Hunslet behind 7-2 at half time and well in the game. However they were beaten in three out of every four scrums in the second half (in those days there were many scrums) and so centres Jack Walkington and G Nicholson were denied the chance to release talented wingers George Broughton and Johnny Coulson. Even without the attacking opportunities, Hunslet’s defence kept them in the game until eight minutes  from time when a lapse allowed a Swinton break by half back Atkinson which was improved by Young to settle matters.

In 1896 Billy Hannah played for The Rest against champions Manningham in the annual Challenge match. Only 2 or 3,000 turned out to watch. Tommy Walsh should also have played but cried off. Hannah score two tries as The Rest won 16-12.

In 1958 Arthur Talbot had a match at Parkside for his benefit against a Yorkshire XIII. As was usual tackling was not a priority in these game as Hunslet won 39-33.

An international match in 1935 in Paris had George Todd at stand-off for the visitors. He scored two tries as England won 32-12.

The 1905/06 season ended today with Hunslet 2nd in the table behind Leigh. Charlie Ward’s 24 put him top of the try scorers and 5th in the league list. Albert’s 50 goals were good enough for 2nd in the league list and 104 points secured 5th top points scorer.

1927/28  season had ended with the Swinton match above. George Broughton (21) and Charles Litt (47 and 100) took the scoring honours.

The last War Emergency League ended in 1945 with a mid-table 11th finish. Freddie Williamson got 12 tries and Des Clarkson 41 goals and 91 points.

1950/51 saw a decent 7th place finish with a Yorkshire Cup semi-final appearance adding a little success. Beneficiary Arthur Talbot above was top goal and points scorer (61 and 131) and Les Williams 20 tries.
