MEMBERS of the Hunslet Rugby Foundation, together with several former Hunslet players, were present when a bench dedicated to Bill Crann was unveiled in Middleton Park.
The bench is situated at one of the former Rugby League referee’s favourite spots, at the side of the lake.
Bill Crann, who was deputy head at the Belle Isle and Middleton (later John Blenkinsop) Secondary Modern schools for many years, coached a host of players who went on to enjoy successful careers with Hunslet RLFC and elsewhere. He passed away last year, at the age of 88.
Directors Kim Groves and Peter Jarvis of the Hunslet Rugby Foundation, who donated the bench, were joined by ex-players including Billy Adams, Alan Charlton, Jimmy Crampton and Keith Mason. Family members present comprised Bill’s daughters Jane and Michelle, son Neil, granddaughter Hayley and, in the pram, great grandchild Cole.
The plaque reads: “In memory of Bill Crann, who was a great asset to rugby league, local schools and the community as a whole. Providing a good pathway for the Hunslet Rugby Foundation.”
