Hunslet Rugby League club have parted company with Head Coach Gary Thornton.
Thornton, who had been at the helm at the South Leeds Stadium for four years, was sacked today (Tuesday 6 July) following Sunday’s surprise Betfred League 1 defeat at Coventry Bears.
The Bears ended the Parksiders’ four-match unbeaten run by posting four converted tries in the closing stages to turn a 44-22 deficit into a 46-44 victory.
Thornton had a final meeting with the squad at this evening’s training session.
Chairman Kenny Sykes said: “Sunday’s defeat follows a number of disappointing performances and results already this season. After due consideration the board has decided that a change of coach is needed to hopefully reinvigorate the squad and give us the best chance of success this season.”
He added: “We are very grateful to Gary for all his hard work over the last four years, particularly in dealing with a number of challenging logistical issues over Covid in the last twelve months, which were critical in getting us back playing.
“We wish him every success in the future.”
The Parksiders are considering their options in terms of a replacement and will make a further announcement shortly. Assistant coach Mark Cass will take temporary charge of training and this Sunday’s home fixture with North Wales Crusaders.
