A real highlight of most weeks for many Hunslet supporters and past players and their partners – not to mention members of the local community – is the Friday morning Breakfast Club, when matters involving the Parksiders and Rugby League, together with general issues in the area, are debated over bacon and sausage butties and unlimited supplies of tea and coffee. Photos and programmes from past matches are pored over and debated and the room is filled with a happy hubbub of chatter.

Yorkshire Tea has got behind the regular bash by supplying a box of their top-quality fare to help the weekly throng stay lubricated.

Former players Lewis Cardiss and Jack Richardson are among those who do tremendous

work behind the scenes in preparing the grub – and regular participant Pat Benatmane is delighted with Yorkshire Tea’s support.

She said: “The Breakfast Club each Friday morning brings us together for a good chin-wag in a friendly group. The core is made up of ex-Parkside players and their wives, but we also have South Leeds Lakers drop in after a run, and fans and council workers enticed by the smell of bacon often pop in. We even have a former Miss Hunslet as a regular.

“Knowing this, I contacted Yorkshire Tea, who were pleased to support this local initiative, run by and for local people. These informal meetings join communities, putting Hunslet RLFC right back where it started. And so we shall again!”

The Breakfast Club takes place in the Phoenix Lounge at the South Leeds Stadium every Friday, from 10am till noon. Admission is free, and butties cost just £2, with unlimited tea or coffee.
