The programme for today in 1978 (Hull Kingston Rovers home) reported that injury time, recorded by our time keeper, in the Wakefield Trinity match on the 15th was 5 minutes 30 seconds in the first half and 4 minutes 15 seconds in the second. This is not the record for the season though – the first match at Keighley was nine minutes 15 seconds in the first and 5 minutes 30 seconds in the second.
Debutants for today….
In 1910, one of our Welsh recruits made his first appearance. A half back, Harry “Toffy” Toft, also known as “The Human Corkscrew”, hailed from Swansea and played 135 games, scoring 23 tries and 18 goals, playing into WW1.
In 1926 at Bramley there were two new players on show, Arthur Feltham and Morgan “Moggie” Jones, both Welshman.
Arthur was a full back from Mountain Ash, playing 139 matches and scoring 5 tries and 98 goals.Moggie (love these imaginative nicknames!) was from Treorchy and played 158 matches with 27 tries and 12 goals. He was club captain in 1923/24.
Coming into the side in 1989 was Paul Burrow. Playing at full back or on the wing, Paul played in 101 matches, scoring 31 tries.
In 1993/94, he scored all 4 tries at Rochdale to equal the tries in a match record for the post 1973 club.
A few representative players also played today.
Forward Harry Beverley, playing in the 1936 Tour Trial today and was later selected for tour down under.
Long serving full back, Jack Walkington, played for England against Wales at Odsal today in 1938, Wales prevailing 7-6. Oliver Morris was at stand off for Wales.
