Hunslet are ready to take on high flying London Broncos at the South Leeds Stadium this Sunday (May 31st 3pm) knowing the Londoners are bringing a full-strength side and showing The Parksiders respect.
With Billy Jowitt and Myles Harrop back in the squad Head Coach Kyle Trout has some welcome headaches in the backline, but with only limited numbers the hosts are light on middles.
“London are a good team, obviously gunning for Super League, but they haven’t really been challenged this year.” said Trout.
“We want to compete against the best and test ourselves, I was actually glad we got London in the fixtures. We are dangerous in attack and if we stay in the game and stick to our processes, we can damage them.”
Hunslet came away from last week’s game at Barrow rueing early mistakes, but Trout can see improvements in his squad
“For 25/30 minutes we looked like a top 4 team, but we need to do that for 80 minutes. We need to learn to feel the game, keep the foot down but not get over emotional. In training this week we’ve focused on combat detail, markers and peeling, getting our process right.”
Hunslet still don’t have a big squad and bringing loans and permanent players in has proved tricky.
“Although we are strong in the backs, with the long-term injuries to Kevin Larroyer and Keelan Foster it means we are still light in the middles and although some lads have knocks, they will likely play. We are always looking for players, but it’s hard to find good fits at the moment as players are away or not available, and we want to bring in the right lads. Having said that both Luca Atkinson and Dom Tydeman had good debuts last week and it was great to see Mackenzie Turner back. Kenz was outstanding, and after working on his performance, I’m really happy with what I’m seeing.”
The next two games against London Broncos and Newcastle Thunder (the top two sides) will be character building for Hunslet before they have a run of games against former League 1 sides.
“Hopefully with some loans and lads returning from fitness we can build up competition for places for the rest of the season, that’s where we’ve struggled, but I feel the fixtures have done us no favours, there are teams above who seem to play former League 1 teams each week whilst we take on Championship sides, however we cannot control that, we think about our performance and what we can do! I want to win!! Not play well for part of the game, and there are some opportunities for that in the remainder of the season.”
Hunslet are also celebrating ‘Superheroes Day’ on Sunday as the game is Sponsored by the Darby Rimmer MND foundation with the Burrow family in attendance as special guests as well as 120 other people in a sold-out Hospitality.
It should be a great day for Rugby League.
