Following the departure of Bak Diabira and Allan Agar, the scrum half position was largely filled by Dickie Brown and Roy Appleyard. On February 2nd, the club signed Tony Dean from Barrow to fill this spot. Making his debut today, the 5th, he immediately made his mark in two games against Dewsbury, dropping 2 goals in the first and scoring a try in the second. He played in the remaining 9 games of the season but couldn’t prevent relegation back to the Second Division. However, the following season, Tony was an ever present in the team, chipping in with 4 tries , 3 goals and 14 drop goals as promotion back to the First Division was achieved.
In this First Division season he played all but six of the fixtures, but again avoiding relegation proved too difficult.
In January 1981, with a young lad called Graham King starting to get regular starts, Tony moved on to Hull.
In 1898, Hunslet had the honour of hosting the Yorkshire v Cumberland County match. Hunslet had two players in the Cumberland team – Billy Hannah and William Young. Young had not played a first team game at this time and played at prop. When he played for Hunslet, he played on the wing! Yorkshire won 8-0.Hannah had previously played for Yorkshire.
1907 saw Hunslet register a three-quarter from Ackworth United who went on to great things – Billy Batten.
1989 saw our first meeting with Chorley Borough in an away league match.
