In 1961 in what would prove to be a major signing, Dennis Hartley switched allegiances from Doncaster to Hunslet for the sum of £3,500. He would be with Hunslet for seven seasons, playing in two Yorkshire Cup finals and one Challenge Cup final.
Dennis was selected for Great Britain, Yorkshire and Rugby League XIII while at Hunslet.On 14th September 1966, he transferred to Castleford where he continued to appear in representative fixtures and cup finals.His Hunslet record is 202 appearances, 23 tries and 1 goal (a drop goal at the end of the 1962 Yorkshire Cup final).
In 1948, coming in from Dewsbury, Arthur Lockwood Talbot signed for Hunslet for £100. A full back, he was with Hunslet for 11 seasons, playing 226 times, scoring 12 tries and 579 goals.He played in the 1956 Yorkshire Cup final and moved on to Batley in1958.
Also in 1948, a Welshman from Pontypool RU, Fred Davies (“Eddie” or “Ginger”) came north to Hunslet. He played 28 times, scoring 1 try and 22 goals. In 1951, Fred moved to the new Doncaster club.
It is reported that he was a good footballer, once scoring 4 goals for Wolves against Spurs. He also played for Hereford United.
In 1912, Hunslet had three players selected for the fixture between Rugby League XIII and Australasia at Wigan. Billy Batten, at centre and Fred Smith, at half back both scored tries, and Albert Jenkinson was on the wing. Australasia won 21-12.
The programme for today in 1913, asked members to contribute £100 to help fund the transfer of Edgar Wrigley from Huddersfield. The programme for the 17th had said he signed on the 7th and funds were available!!
At the start of our 1999 Grand Final season, four players made their debuts against Tonwnville in the Challenge Cup. Butch Fatnowna, Mike Fetcher, David Mycoe and Richard Pachniuk all pulled on a Hunslet jersey for the first time.
