Another quiet day – only 11 fixtures have been played on the 3rd January starting with Pontefract away in 1885 (lost 0 goals to 1 goal) and the last being a 38-14 victory at home against Chorley Chieftains in 1996.
The draw for the 1886/87 Yorkshire County Cup was published today. Our third outing in this competition saw us drawn at home to Salterhebble in the 1st round followed by a visit to Wortley or Batley in the second should we be successful.
An important signing was made on 3rd January 1957. Believed to have been our first South African import, Ronnie Colin joined us from Gardens RU in Cape Town. Ronnie was a winger who played for 4 seasons at Parkside, making 94 appearances and scoring 61 tries – a more than respectable strike rate.
He also kicked a solitary goal in December 1957, converting a Geoff Gunney try at Huddersfield.
Ronnie was on the right wing in the 1959 Championship Final against St Helens.
He returned to South Africa in 1962.
