Hunslet’s Season Launch Event saw representatives from local community clubs and Cockburn School present the Class of ’25 with their famous myrtle, white and flame jerseys.
Director of Rugby Darren Higgins welcomed the coaches of Drighlington, Hunslet ARLFC, Morley Knights, Oulton Raiders and teachers from Cockburn School and thanked them for the great work they do in the community.
“Without the army of volunteers at community clubs and teachers bringing through the next generation, there is no professional game. We are fortunate to have some fantastic clubs on our doorstep and Cockburn School are excelling with their teams. We are grateful for the work they do and want South Leeds youngsters to play for Hunslet.”
Children from the clubs then joined Chairman Kenny Sykes in presenting the jerseys to this year’s squad.
Kenny, who was part of the 1979 promotion winning team, is looking forward to the new season. “We finished second to the Hull Invincibles that year. We had a good team, but the step-up proved too much for us, and we went straight back down the following season. We are under no illusions that this year is also a step-up, but Dean has recruited well, adding to the lads who did such a fantastic job last season. It will be a challenge but one we are all looking forward to.”
Hunslet host Super League Huddersfield Giants in the Challenge Cup this Sunday and Bradford Bulls on the 23rd February.
