Hunslet Hawks made a meal of beating the lowly Hemel Stags 44-28 in their Kingstone Press League 1 match at South Leeds Stadium on Sunday (8 May 2016).
The score line flattered the home team as the Stags kept within a score of winning up until the last few minutes of the match. Hawks Coach Matt Bramald described the performance as “scratchy” to the Yorkshire Evening Post and added that without the first five minutes and last five minutes the Hawks could have been turned over.
Hunslet quickly went two tries up through James Duckworth and Ayden Faal, but Hemel struck back and took the lead, 10-12 on 28 minutes with tries from Clough and Rance.
George Flanagan struck twice on 32 and 36 minutes to give Hunslet a 22-18 lead, but Pearce-Paul scored just before the break to draw level.
The teams went in at half time drawing 22-22.
Liam Mackay opened the scoring in the second half , but Stewart regained the lead for Hemel going over on 52 minutes to take the score to 26-28.
George Flanagan completed his hat-trick four minutes later and Hunslet took back the lead 32-28.
Finally the Hawks put the game away as Jimmy Watson scored in the 79th minute followed quickly by Mackay’s second try on 80 minutes.
Simon Brown kicked 6 goals from 8 attempts for the Hawks, whilst Ben Stead kicked 4 goals from 5 for the Stags.

The Hawks remain ninth in League 1 with just four points after six games. In their next game they will entertain Toulouse on Sunday 15 May.
