Recap
The Hunslet Hawks were in for a shock today, not helped by the growing injury problems for both us and our partner club Leeds Rhinos, Swinton Lions ran in a 36-6 victory knocking the home side 2 places down the table.
It all went wrong from the off just minutes into the game and the Lions rewarded themselves through Kevin Penny who had broken the line from the kick off, Waine Pryce stopped him in the corner but running around the rook for the next play he managed to touch it down for himself. Despite efforts on the back of numerous penalties the home side couldn’t seem to put anything together to get through the defence. Haughey got the ball away to Haigh and the hooker was held up over the line. The next chance came when Ansell chipped it over the top on the free play with plenty of runners it could have worked. A forward pass to Liam Welham was the next opportunity missed as the centre was across the whitewash but the officials were quick to cancel the try. It was inevitable that on the rebound the Lions would gain something from the mistake and put themselves further ahead. The visitors were enjoying all the early pressure and Craig Harvey crossed latching on to the inside ball. It was disappointing that Barry’s side hasn’t managed to keep Swinton at bay before half time.
Having gone to the break trailing by 12 it would take something big to come back from it especially as a Swinton try opened things up Martin Ainscough managed to stretch out his arm despite efforts to bundle him into touch. The concerns in defence continued and the missed tackles early in the set were what were letting the Hunslet outfit down. Craig Harvey had touched down before the boys had time to react 24-0 as Harvey had his kicking boot on landing 4 from 4 of his conversions. Hunslet eager to prove that they still had something left in them and were attempting everything they could. Windley with a spiralling pass from half back; Kain on the end of it they had the overlap but again a decision from the officials that said the ball went forward. The visitors continued in the same form and when David Mills broke free he played a great dummy and raced under the sticks. The boys looked embarrassed by the 30-0 gap but they managed to keep going. Watson fired things up and got his side into good field position before Coyle sent Haley thundering over for a consolation try. Too little too late as the misery continued for the Hawks when Ryan Shaw caught Windley’s chip through and slid over for a full length try just as the hooter sounded.
A disastrous afternoon with a disappointing result for the Hawks they have worked hard in recent weeks and fought back against top teams. To come out of this afternoon with nothing is worrying and things will have to get back on track. The next few games are all winnable to form needs to improve and player’s needs to return from injury.
