Recap
A devastating defeat last week did not knock the Hawks too far off track as they travelled to the London Skolars and came up with a 36-10 win to kick off the Wembley weekend in style.
Luke Briscoe the first name on the score board with a try after just 12 minutes. Flying through the defence to touch it down and give the Hawks the strong start they needed. The second try a reward for the visitors a high tackle granted Coyle the ball to kick for touch and when Maun came steaming on to the gap there was no stopping him, busting through tackles and finishing it off to further the advantage. The boys were hammering in to the Skolars this evening and giving little away in defence. The possession share told once again as the home side tired which allowed Luke Stenchion to power through and over the line. Liam Mackay followed shortly after weaving through the opposition to reward the side with 4 more points Skipper March making it 100% success with his conversions this evening. The Hawks outfit were leaving nothing to chance this evening clinical in all aspects they enjoyed being able to throw the ball about. Richard Moore’s offloads causing problems all over the field he chose to keep it to himself this time and looking set for the whitewash a late pass to Jimmy Watson to be safe allowed the fullback to seal the deal and put it over the line. Little to complain about after the first 40 minutes with 30-0 the score at halftime, the boys just had the small job of putting the game to bed in the second half.
It looked to be going the right way opening up with a sting; winger Lee Brickwood was almost clean away with a dart from dummy half. But it was the Coyle kick that did it for Hawks opposite winger Gavin Duffy who capitalised as he stole the ball from the air and put it over in the corner. As March put the ball cleanly through the sticks he made if 6 from 6 this evening. Ross Peltier maintained his good form the driving force down the centre of the field and Oakes also putting in good yards down the left channel but neither could burst their way through late on. A fall in intensity punished the visitors as the home side bit back, miscommunication from the defenders gave Mvududu a gap to walk straight into and the Skolars weren’t finished there. Ex – Hawk Tuffour got a late pass on the line but a killer tackle from Stenchion who shot out of the line put an end to any danger. His efforts in vain as moments later Mvududu helped himself to his second, Bishay raced back into the line after his conversion attempt bounced awkwardly off the upright the London side were ready for a comeback in their final home game of the season. It was a relief when the hooter blew but the Hawks had done enough in the first half to grant them the 3 points.
36-10 was a steady win for Barry’s side who now face another week off before heading to South Wales for the final game off the league. The win puts the boys in second position but a big effort is needed to keep us firmly planted there.
Hope to see you all in South Wales in two weeks time.
