In the press today in 1970 it was reported that following the player’s strike at the beginning of the season Hunslet had been fined £150 by the Rugby League for registration irregularities. The fine was due today but had not been paid. The Rugby League Council were to discuss the situation In due course.
Also Dave Marshall, not wanting to re-sign after the strike, had appealed against the £6,000 transfer fee imposed by the club. The appeal was rejected.
1950s centre Colin Byrom made his debut today in 1955 at Wakefield Trinity. Signed from Hunslet Supporters he played 56 times in five seasons scoring 17 tries. In 1962 he transferred to Dewsbury.
In a County Trial early in Hunslet’s history forwards Charles Bennett and Edward Kaye played for Leeds District against Bradford District in the 1890 match at Bramley. Leeds won by 2 goals to nil but neither player progressed to further Trial matches.
In the 1927 County Championship Glamorgan and Monmouthshire played Cumberland at Pontypridd and two Hunslet players were in opposition, On the Welsh side was prop Dai Jenkins facing winger Johnny Coulson. In the first ten minutes Cumberland scored two tries and when after thirty minutes the Welsh lost centre Rosser to injury that pretty much settle the match, Cumberland winning 18-12. Coulson scored a try.
Johnny Coulson was again in action for his County against Lancashire in 1932 at Barrow. Cumberland became County Champions due to their 9-3 victory in front of 12,689.
Yorkshire Cup first round ties today….
1910 brought Hull Kingston Rovers to Parkside. The scores were level at 8-8 in the last minute when Rovers’ Hyam attempted a drop goal. It appeared to have been successful but dropped just short. The only player who had anticipated this was Rovers’ Thomas who followed up to touch down and win the tie.
1921 was an away match Batley. Two Guerin penalties gave Hunslet a 4-2 interval lead but Kilby’s second half try settled matters in the favour of the home side.
