The 22nd saw a couple of players a lot of us should recognise make their first appearances. Most recently, 2015 saw the arrival in the club’s ranks of George Flanagan. Brought in from Featherstone Rovers. I think we’ll all remember George’s knack of scoring tries from dummy half and his impressive scoring record is 47 tries from 69 games. He also chipped in a couple of goals in a  match away at Gloucester. When Bradford Bulls made enquiries, George jumped at the chance to play for his hometown club and moved in 2018.

A little further back, in 1976, Hull made enquiries for Jimmy Crampton and he took the chance of playing for a higher profile club. The directors used the transfer fee to secure the services of Frank Davies from Huddersfield. Also a second rower, he was a different type of player to Jimmy, being an organiser and tactical kicker. In his first full season he dropped 4 goals and in 1977/78 dropped 6 to set new season records for the reformed club. He also scored a hat-trick of tries against Bramley in 1978 to equal the new club’s record. He was club captain in 1976/77 and represented Wales in 1977/78. His Hunslet stats are played 59, 23 tries, 106 goals and 10 drop goals.

Going back to the post war years and 1946 saw Maurice M. Thornton sign on from Hunslet Supporters (£200 signing on fee). It would be March 1948 before he made it into the first team, and despite some quality threequarters at the club, he made 92 appearances and scored 21 tries before moving to Hull Kingston Rovers.

In 1896, for the first time under Northern Union rules, we paid a visit to Headingley to play Leeds. Whether it was by tram or charabanc, it was a happy journey home after a 3-0 win, Albert G. getting the try.

Those who remember our time at the Greyhounds and Mount Pleasant will remember Paul Daley in his spells as coach (do you remember the “half time entertainment” at Batley as Paul “inspired” his team to do better). Story has it, he smashed his clipboard in half on the dressing room table and the players had a whip round to get him a new one for Christmas! Not everyone may remember that Paul pulled on his boots in his first spell at The Greyhound Stadium to make two appearances, his first being today in up at Workington in 1975 (Hunslet lost 14-18).
