Two weeks after the first game at the new Parkside enclosure, today, in1888, was the “official” opening of the ground. Many local dignitaries were in attendance, but the opponents, Brighouse Rangers, spoilt the party by winning 1 goal to nil.
In 1911, James Batten made his debut at home to Ebbw Vale taking up one centre position with younger brother Billy in the other, James didn’t score in a 14-2 win. James, although playing for Hemsworth, was registered with and signed from Leeds. He later transferred to York. In three season he made 70 appearances, touching down 21 times and kicking 4 goals.

In 1939, James’ nephew, Eric Batten, together with Cyril Morrell travelled to St Helens to play for England against France. Cyril scored a try but it wasn’t enough to stop France registering a 12-9 win.
