An era came to end today when Albert Edward Goldthorpe played his last match in 1910 at home to Salford. Records for both Union and Northern Union eras are incomplete as line- ups are not available for all games. To date for Hunslet 466 Northern Union games and 235 Union games have identified Albert’s participation. He scored 289 goals and 35 tries at Union and in the professional era 684 goals and 46 tries. Albert’s representative career started in 1891 with a County Trial and he went on to play for Yorkshire 14 times. His scoring records are too numerous to list but in 1907/08 he became the first NU player to exceed 100 goals in season. He was club captain from 1896 to 1909 and he played in 7 finals. He was inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2015.

Today in 2000 Gareth Naylor made his debut at Oldham. These weren’t the best days for the club following the fall-out from the 1999 Grand Final but Gareth was a good servant through these times playing 109 games as a utility player over seven season scoring 37 tries and 43 goals.

The 1910 Wales v England international at Ebbw Vale included Billy Batten, Fred Smith and Bill Jukes in the England side but they couldn’t help prevent a 39-18 defeat.
Participation in the cups continued today, the first being the 4th round Yorkshire cup tie in 1892 away at Brighouse Rangers. The home side were the favourites but the reports praised Hunslet’s forwards who laid the platform for a 13-4 win and a place in their second semi-final.
In the 3rd round of the 1902 Challenge Cup Hunslet had been held to a draw by Heckmondwike and the replay was at Parkside today. It was another close game against a team from a lower division, Two Hannah tries seeing Hunslet home 6-2.
Two seasons drew to a close today. The 1900/01 Yorkshire Senior Competition ended with a 15-0 home win against Castleford giving Hunslet a 3rd place finish with twenty wins from their thirty fixtures. Albert Goldthorpe was top goal (44) and points (94) scorer and he was top goal scorer in the league. Tries were spread around the players with Billy Hannah top with 6.
1909/10 finished with a 2-3 defeat home defeat to Salford. Mid table in both the Northern Rugby League and Yorkshire League was disappointing. Billy Batten and Freddie Farrar both scored 11 tries and 18 goals for 69 points.
For the league match in 1927 against Featherstone Rovers at Parkside the weather was atrocious. There was standing water on the pitch before the game and heavy rain throughout. Leeds Mercury said the match saw Hunslet slip and slide their way to a win. Featherstone disputed the issue throughout but Hunslet kept their feet long enough to score three tries and win 11-2. The referee played two thirty minute halves with no break.
Albert was also Hunslet cricket captain, committee member and club secretary. Also teetotal
