Hunslet make their third long journey of the season this weekend (March 29th) to the Cherry Red Records stadium, Wimbledon. Home of the London Broncos.
Head Coach Dean Muir has had injuries to contend with but is still confident his side can put in a good performance against a London side that has had a mixed bag of results (beating Featherstone and Dewsbury but losing to Goole and Oldham).
“It’s been a massively tough start to our Championship campaign.” said Muir “But we knew it would be. It’s not how you start the season, but how you finish it. We’ve had knocks and injuries, but we prepare and go about our business as usual.”
Last week’s trip to Toulouse was a tough ask, but there were positives to take from the performance.
“Jordan Syme played well, and his work rate was excellent. Putting his hand up to play hooker shows he is a really committed player. Harrison Gilmore went well on debut with some nice involvement and Billy Jowitt showed what he can do. It’s also nice to see Matty Fletcher getting more minutes, but although the effort was there, we lacked composure and found continuity difficult after having to make changes from the Doncaster game.
“It’s frustrating we haven’t won yet, but we need to be patient. It will come. We haven’t had our best 17 on the field all season.”
Hunslet go out to win every game, and it’s no different this week.
“It’s another opportunity to challenge. We believe we can score tries, but we must get better defensively. We can’t have playoffs at this level. In League 1 we may get away with it, but not in the Championship. It’s closer to Super League in that respect.”
There are no easy games in the Championship, and it’s a very unpredictable league. Barrow were predicted to be near the bottom but have started well and teams regularly take points off each other.
London Broncos may not be favourites for promotion but still pose a threat. “On a good day they are a tough team to beat. They have a big pack full of Super League experience, but if we work hard, we will eventually reap our rewards.”
Maybe Hunslet can cause an upset this week and kickstart their season as more localised games appear on the horizon.
