Injuries to two of our ball-players were Hunslet’s only concern from the 60-16 win at Hemel Stags which confirmed their place in the Kingstone Press League One Shield final.

Hunslet are second in the table, a point behind London Skolars who visit South Leeds Stadium on Sunday.

The winner will finish top and have home advantage in the Shield decider a week later.

Hunslet coach Gary Thornton said: “Shaun Roberts suffered a sternum injury against Hemel and he had to go to hospital to check it wasn’t fractured or cracked.

“Joel Gibson did something to his knee, but he was able to play on. That’s a slight concern, but I think he should be okay.”

Thornton was pleased by the way his team dealt with second-bottom Hemel. Shaun Roberts. “It was a matter of knowing what to do and going and doing it,” he said.

“We’ve had a few slip-ups away from home and that was a potential banana skin, but we played well.

“We played some decent stuff in difficult conditions – it’s a narrow, small pitch and there was a strong wind blowing up the middle.

“Yet again, for 60 minutes we were good.

“We let ourselves down for a spell in the second half, but it’s difficult [maintaining concentration] when you are defending a 36-0 lead and we did what we had to do.”
