Our thoughts are with the family and close friends of Brian Burkitt today as they say their farewells to him at Rawdon Crematorium.ย Brian passed away on the 8th of June aged 75. The vast majority of those years were spent following his beloved Hunslet.
Brian’s first match was as a 3 year old at Parkside for a game against Featherstone in 1948. We lost 32-0. Even at that tender age Brian knew supporting Hunslet was never about the glory and he stuck by the Club all of his life.ย He was a Board member in the difficult days when we had no ground and played our home fixtures at Batley. Brian was an unsung hero who will be sadly missed by everyone at the Club.
Rest in peace Brian.
Brian was married to my mum in the seventies/eighties and when I came to live with him he took me to Hunslet games. We went everywhere, Home and Away, even when the club didn’t have a home, and he left me with a lifelong love of Rugby League and of Hunslet (and real ale)! Thank you for your tribute.
I have know Brian for many years and on many occasions we celebrated or commiserated together after many Hunslet games. He was a true enthusiast for all thing Hunslet RLFC. Great guy, he is sadly missed
I studied Economics at the University of Bradford under Dr. Burkitt from 1980 – 1983.
He was a lovely man and we had many conversations about Rugby League (I am a lifelong Hull KR supporter). So sorry to hear about his passing. RIP Dr. Burkitt.
I was sad to read of the passing of Dr Burkitt. He was an inspiration to me at Bradford University. I still remember some of his amazing lectures delivered with passion and humour and an understanding so deep it was like listening to a storyteller, “Show me a rich economist and I will show you a happy psychologist, both are equally as rare” RIP
