National Sporting Heritage Day is an annual event, held on the 30th of September, that aims to raise awareness about sporting heritage in the UK, including the history of certain sports and significant past achievements. The day is designed to be inspirational and aspirational and it aims to inspire and motivate people to learn more about sports and sporting heritage.
National Sporting Heritage Day is about celebrating our own achievements. The first National Sporting Heritage Day took place in 2014 after the success of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Team GB won a whopping 65 medals! Whether you enjoy sports or not, you have to recognize what an amazing achievement that is. British sporting stars have accomplished such great things for years before and after this, so we now celebrate these on this designated day. The day is run by National Sporting Heritage CIC – a non profit organization dedicated to the collection and preservation of UK sporting heritage.
As Hunslet is a Rugby League Club with an extremely rich history and heritage the club feel it is appropriate to celebrate this on Sporting Heritage Day. The club will hold their first online sporting reminiscence event via Zoom with special guests Tony Collins (Rugby League Historian), Steve Boothroyd (Leeds & Hunslet Schools Rugby League) and former player/legend Steve Pryce.
The focus of discussions on the night will be Hunslet Rugby League related, but conversations could go in different directions we will see where the conversations take us into other sports or society and experiences in general, all welcome to join us, but numbers for the session will be limited to give everyone a chance to chat and ask questions/share their own memories.
Chris Chatten, General Manager said, “We hope this online session for sporting heritage day can be a catalyst to increasing the history and heritage activity around the club and the wider community, there is certainly a lot to talk about with the club having been one of the founder members and also being the first club to win every competition on offer in a season.”
