The first round of the Kingstone Press Super 8s Championship Shield saw the Hunslet Hawks travel to Dewsbury Rams’ Tetley’s Stadium on Sunday.
Hunslet kicked off the match and traded sets with Dewsbury in the early exchanges. The Rams were first on the scoreboard with a try by Dale Morton after 16 minutes, but – missed the conversion. Hunslet replied through Jack Lee on 23 minutes, taking a 4-6 lead.
On 32 minutes Shane Grady scored for the home team and Dewsbury took that 10-6 lead in to half time.
Errors from both sides characterised the opening exchanges of the second half, but then Hunslet regained the lead with Jack Lee’s second try of the match on 48 minutes. Having kicked the extras, Brown extended the lead to 10-14 with a penalty goal.
Three minutes later Hunslet had the chance to score again, but failed to capitalise. They paid the price for their loss of momentum as Dewsbury ran over three tries in 12 minutes.
Shane Grady scored on 55 minutes, followed by Scott Hale on 63 and Ryan Fieldhouse on 67 minutes, taking the score to 26-14.
The match wasn’t over however and Hunslet created good pressure, but were penalised for a forward pass. Dalton Grant sealed the win for Dewsbury with a try on 76 minutes taking the lead to 32-14.
Hunslet scored a late try through Danny Maun, but it proved too little, too late.
Final score: Dewsbury Rams 32-20 Hunslet Hawks.
The result sees Hunslet stuck in the relegation zone. Their next match will be at home to Workington Town on Sunday 16 August, kick off 3pm.
