Hunslet are sad to announce the departure of Director of Rugby, Darren Higgins. Darren has been appointed full-time Head of Youth at Leeds Rhinos which, unfortunately, will impact his ability to continue effectively as Director of Rugby at Hunslet. The appointment is testament to the high standing that Darren has in the sport.
CEO Neil Hampshire said “It’s been a pleasure to get to know and work with Darren over the last 18 months or so, and I’d like to thank him for all his efforts and support. He’s had a major influence in identifying and introducing new young talent which will bode well for us in the future. We do see his appointment as a positive for us too though, as, hopefully, he will be sending more of that young talent our way in the coming years. His appointment is well deserved, and we wish him every success going forward.”
Darren responded: “Although the 2025 season has been a tough season for us all on the field, it has also been very enjoyable in other ways. This season was always going to be a challenging season with the over-achievement of 2024 and promotion to the Championship being so late in the year from a recruitment perspective. At the same time, the team and club will be better for this year ahead of the new league structure in 2026. Not only have younger members of the squad gained valuable experience playing at a higher level, these players have also been retained along with other recruitment who will add value to the squad next year. Although we are unable to compete financially with some of the spending we see at other clubs, this comes from a good place, with the board taking the long term future and security of the club as a priority. The club is strong and resourceful in other areas, with an honesty and integrity in the way the club is led, which is not always common place in professional sport. Although it’s been a tough baptism of fire for both Kyle and Michael, I know they will be better for the tough lessons of this year. Although they are both at the beginning of their coaching journey, they have the knowledge, drive and care for the club that will help drive on-field performances in 2026 as they continue to develop a team identity that fits the club. It’s with mixed feelings that I leave the DoR role but will no doubt be at fixtures next season supporting Kyle, Knoz and the lads.”
