Hawks_logoHunslet Hawks travelled to Cumbria on to face Barrow Raiders at Craven Park in the Kingstone Championship 1. Momentum is vital in sport and last week Barrow got a good win in North Wales to start their league season, whilst Hunslet lost at Rochdale Hornets. Barrow took that momentum into the match and dominated the first half scoring 28 unanswered points.
Before the kick off there was a minute’s silence for Les Belshaw who played for Barrow at Wembley in 1955 when they beat local rivals Workington Town in the Challenge Cup final.
Ryan Fieldhouse opened the scoring for the Raiders on 7 minutes with a try that was converted by Josh Ward. Six minutes later Liam Harrison charged over and Ward’s conversion made it 12-0.
Cameron Pitman was next onto the score sheet, going over in the corner to finish a flowing Barrow move. Ward missed the conversion.
On the half hour Max Wiper scored try number four after Hunslet failed to deal with good Barrow pressure. Josh Ward kicked the extras to take the score to 22-0.
The Raiders’ last score of the first half came following a break by Joe Bullock. Dan Toal scored the try and Josh Ward once again kicked the conversion. Barrow went into the break 28-0 up.
The second half started better for Hunslet Hawks and in form Richie Barnett scored on 49 minutes. Simon Brown converted.
But three minutes later Barrow were back on the score sheet as Dan Abrams picked up a loose ball on half way and ran it back to score. Ward converted the try and two minutes later added a penalty to take the score to 36-6.
Hunslet’s defence improved kept Barrow out for 20 minutes, but Ryan Fieldhouse scored his second try of the afternoon five minutes before the hooter, going over in the corner. Ward was unable to convert but the final score was 40-6.
