Hemel Stags v Hunslet RLFC

Pennine Way

Recap

An exciting week off the field as the Hawks signed Keighley’s Ross Peltier and Leeds Rhinos Luke Briscoe on loan until the end of the season. This and the addition of dual- reg player Chris Clarkson was the making of a great fixture at the Pennine Way ground which saw the Hawks come away with the vital result.

A 34-16 victory sets the boys in good stead as we head into the final 3 league games.

The visitors got off to a flying start with winger Gavin Duffy touching down on the end of a perfectly placed Thomas Coyle kick. March put the conversion wide this time hindered by the awful winds in Hemel this afternoon. The conditions underfoot not much better with torrential rain all morning slowing down just before kick off there were plenty of long down field kicks to handle in the first quarter, fullback Jimmy Watson had his work cut out for him but did not seem fazed by the additional pressure making some impressive metres down field. It was not long before Duffy crossed for his second, a case of deja vu for the winger who once again put down a Thomas Coyle kick in an almost identical try. Mistakes did creep in for the Hawks, especially attempting to handle the darting runs of London Broncos star Kieron Dixon. An error from Kain infront of the posts gave Hemel the ball to play with and they were almost across, it was left to Liam Mackay who came up with a massive try saving tackle and forced the knock on to relieve his side. Skipper March took back control and down the opposite side of the field and made a break for the line, but he gave a late offload to Maun for him to finish with a sprint over the whitewash instead. Peltier was brought on from the bench late into the first half and looked eager to make an early impression. Covering 10 yards on his first touch of the ball, his services will be highly favoured into these final games. Duffy was set to make his first half hat trick, a grubber this time from Grimshaw that beat Stags Hill but bounced perfectly for Gavin to put it down in the corner. A confident first 40 minutes and a safe advantage to take into the second half.

A difficult way to open with some harsh decisions being handed against the Hawks, but when Broughton finally got his hands on the ball he crashed over under the posts with ease. No sooner had March landed the conversion; the Stags were knocking on the line and hastily replied to Brooke’s efforts with one of their own Swindells the first name on the board for the home team. Uncompleted sets from Barry’s side granted the Stags a converted try courtesy of Jy-Mel Coleman. The two sides were involved in a bit of a heated affair at the South Leeds Stadium earlier in the season and similar looked to be happening again. The home side punished as Thomas Coyle landed a penalty infront of the posts to push the Hawks further infront. Something had spurred the Stags on at the break as they weren’t put off by the Hawks lead and Bannister, on debut, got himself over the line minutes later. It was clear the Hawks knew how to finish the game Danny Grimshaw skirted round the edge of defenders to deliver the final blow. Troy Perkins side were given a last shot with a penalty just before the hooter but it was too little too late and the visitors took the points this afternoon.

The first win of a difficult 4 matches as we head towards the end of the season but a confident Hawks outfit today look ready to face the massive challenge of current league leaders the York City Knights.

Gavin Duffy touches down for his hat trick try.
