Recap

Barry Eaton’s side came up with a professional and clinical victory over the South Wales Scorpions. A score line of 74-0 reflected the dominance of the Hawks attack and the impressive defence. Sending out the message once again the Hawks are serious contenders they raced in 13 tries this afternoon.

Fullback Jimmy Watson set the tone on 2 minutes clinging to the touchline he sprinted the distance and put the ball over in the corner. Danny Maun wanted in on the action minutes later cleaning up a loose ball he was tripped just short. Liam Hood made the hard work count as he scooted over from dummy half. The Scorpions came into today’s game with plenty of confidence despite lying at the bottom of the table; the South Wales side have some quality within their ranks. Hooker Connor Farrer particularly stood out; splitting open the line he gave his side a glimmer of hope, a late pass to Harrison Elliott who almost put crucial points on the board for the Scorpions but a big challenge from Watson rescued the home side from danger. South Wales suffered once more as the Hawks got back into their blistering attack. Aston Wilson crossing on the end of a kick to the corner and skipper David March, who had a clear path through to the line latching onto a neat Danny Maun pass. The conditions were perfect for the Hawks ball handlers Grimshaw and Ansell to showcase how exciting the home side can be in possession. Despite battling with the Scorpions who were attempting to slow down the game with interference at the ruck but Barry’s side remained disciplined. Finishing off the half with a bit of excitement was Liam Hood who stole his second as the hooter blew.

The South Wales side had a mountain to climb if there were going to get back into it. Things did not get any easier for them when Liam Mackay opened things up wrestling his way over the line. The Scorpions kicked the ball out on the full from the restart which only fuelled the hosts further. Second rower Oakes hit the gap and powered over for his first. The Scorpions had not had their hands on the ball for much of the second half and the repeat defensive sets were taking their toll. Aston Wilson managed to break through and score almost unopposed. Jimmy Watson appeared to be enjoying being back in the fullback role and proved it was the position he could be most effective from. Securing his hatrick with 2 close tries the first set up by Liam Hood who got a late ball away to him, the second an individual effort, finding himself in position for Ansell’s chip he raced through to put it over a strong effort from Watson today. Ballard maintaining his kicking consistency landing all but 2 and the tries keeping coming the score line had reached 56-0.
Houston and Haley both claiming to have scored consecutively the two tries were both ruled out for errors in the build up. But the forwards finally did claim their points this time Lewis Reed and James Houston finding themselves across the whitewash. Oakes claimed try number two delivering the final blow he jumped up to steal the ball from the air and touched it down to make it 74-0.

A much tighter result when these 2 sides met earlier on this year but Eaton’s team today produced their biggest win of the year so far. A comfortable team effort from the Hawks who have another week off before a huge game against the Rougheyeds the following weekend.

Hope to see you all there.
