In the 1908 league match against Merthyr Tydfil at Parkside a weakened Hunslet side won the game 5-3. Towards the end of the game W. H. Wood, the referee, sent off John Higson of Hunslet for kicking and Merthyr’s W. Thomas for a foul charge. At the end of the game a section of the crowd showed their displeasure at the referee and one spectator kicked him. The police got the official back to his changing room and the crowd dispersed. However a summons was issued to the offender. At the hearing his defence was that the kick was accidental and that he had apologised to Mr Wood and they had shaken hands. The magistrate suggested that the charge be withdrawn and the prosecution agreed. Hunslet were still ordered to post warning notices and pay the court costs

The biggest match to take place today was in 1997 when Hunslet travelled to Widnes for the Challenge Cup Plate semi-final. Second Division Widnes were favourites against Third Division Hunslet and the writing was on the wall as early as the 3rd minute when Cunningham scored a converted try. Hunslet then got three successive sets which ended with a Criag Booth penalty. A Paul Mansson interception try, Booth’s conversion and a David Brook drop goal gave Hunslet a 9-6 half-time lead. In the second half Widnes refused a kickable penalty which backfired as Hunslet attacked and a Mansson kick to the corner was touched down by Chris Ross. Nelson scored a converted try to make it 13-12 to Hunslet and seven minutes from time a 60 yard Hunslet passing move led to a converted Booth try. A late Widnes try by Kendrick brought the score to 19-18 to Hunslet and as the clock ran down Widnes chose not to attempt the drop goal which would have forced the draw and Hunslet were on their way to Wembley!

A couple of wingers on rep duty today. In 1927 Johnny Coulson travelled to Salford to assist his county, Cumberland, against Lancashire. The Red Rose came through for a 12-5 win. 1940 saw Eric Batten playing for Yorkshire League against Lancashire League at Barrow. His two tries helped the Tykes to a 13-10 win.

Another Yorkshire Cup tie today. 1895’s visitors were Pudsey and Hunslet progressed to the third round 7-0.

In 2014 Hunslet made their first visit to Oxford’s Iffley Road and they won a league game 46-20.
