Recap
Hunslet’s slim chances of avoiding relegation from the Kingstone Press Championship were snuffed out in a scrappy loss to Featherstone Rovers at South Leeds Stadium last night (11 September 2015).
Featherstone finally broke the deadlock on 38 minutes, just before half time when Ellis scored and Sykes kicked the conversion. Rovers went into half time 0-6 up.
Four minutes after half time Sykes scored again and kicked converted his own try taking the score to 0-12.
It was another twenty minutes before Hunslet finally got on the score sheet. Danny Maun went over, but Brown’s kicks was wide. The score was now 4-12 after 65 minutes.
Four minutes later Ben Blackmore took a loose ball 80m to score a breakaway try. Again Sykes kicked the extras and Featherstone took their lead to 4-18.
As full time approached Hunslet broke through again with Flanagan scoring. Watson’s kick after the hooter was successful.
Final score: Hunslet Hawks 10-18 Featherstone Rovers
Although Hunslet have only managed one season in the second tier of rugby league, they can be proud of their achievements this season. Hunslet is a small community club and they were up against some of the big names and big budgets of the sport.
Fans who have shown tremendous vocal support all season took to Twitter to show their appreciation:
James Deighton @rlwithjd
Sad to see @HunsletHawksRL’s fate sealed but eight wins is eight more than some people expected, and on a fraction of some club’s budgets!!
Adam Blackburn @AdamBlackburn00
@DannyMaun @HunsletHawksRL It will be good, when you win the Championship 1 Grand Final again next season. Bounce back ability
Trev ‘brownie’ Brown @brownielu1919:
Gutted, but we’ll get up, dust ourselves down and carry on because we’re HUNSLET !! #sticktogether #F. E. A.
The Hawks’ final game of the season will be next Sunday (20 September 2015) away at Batley Bulldogs.
