The January 2021 edition of Hunslet’s free on-line magazine South of the River contains in its 41 pages an engrossing combination of present-day events and issues, and the south Leeds outfit’s very rich history.

Head coach Gary Thornton anticipates the 2021 Betfred League campaign, and reveals the positive mood of a squad which went into last March’s lockdown on top of the standings. And chairman Kenny Sykes confirms, ahead of the agm later this month, that the Parksiders are in a healthy financial condition, thanks to prudent management and, importantly, the continued backing of sponsors, members and supporters.

Pat Benatmane takes a dip into the distant past in her unfailingly entertaining monthly column and Steve Calline continues his assessments of the many Welshmen who have served Hunslet since the club was launched in 1883.

Under the stewardship of Guardian of the List Martin Stewart, the monthly homage to the men who have represented the club hits an absorbing second stage, while Steve Boothroyd celebrates some of the historic achievements of the area’s schools.

With features on players past and present -including those who brushed aside the coronavirus pandemic to stage 2020’s Hunslet Ex-Parkside Former Players reunion – South of the River remains an ideal way of passing the long lockdown hours.
