Hunslet volunteer Ian Pickles has done a great job keeping the members of South Leeds Lakers active during lockdown. Ian has been organising a series of challenges over the last year and the latest virtual 5k and 2k events saw youngsters with a Hunslet connection take the honours.

The senior 5k was won by Jess Bowman. Although still a junior Jess was keen to take on the “oldies” and posted the biggest improvement in time knocking 4 minutes off her pre-lockdown PB.  Jess’ Great Uncle was Keith Bowman who played 113 games for the Club between 1948 and 1953. Keith racked up an impressive 58 tries so its clear to see where Jess gets her sporting prowess from.

The 2k Junior event was won by Ed Horton, whose Grandad Gary Halloway played for the Intermediates in the Parkside days.

We look forward to welcoming Jess and Ed down to South Leeds Stadium this season.

South Leeds Lakers was founded in 2015 thanks to funding from the Hunslet Rugby Foundation.  They now have a very popular Junior section and pride themselves on being free to the community.  Check out their Facebook page South Leeds Lakers Members for further details.
