After the recent call for membership renewals supporter John Carr has made it a personal mission to play his part in increasing numbers by setting up the official Hunslet RLFC “Barnsley Supporters Club”
John hails from Barnsley but Hunslet is where his heart is “I was brought up in Barnsley and visited my Mother’s family in Rothwell at weekends. In the late 80’s I got a job at Vickers Oils in Hunslet and worked with family members of Ralph Glynn (the Parkside Groundsman) so I was indoctrinated even more into Hunslet RL. Then that fateful day, my Dad rang me at work and instructed me to go to the SLS and purchase 2 tickets for the first Home game in the new stadium, as he had sworn not to go to watch Hunslet again, until they returned to Hunslet”.
“Moving forward I am setting up a Barnsley Section of HIST. At the moment we have 3 members (me and my Dad being 2 of them). However I know there is interest in RL within Barnsley. Dodworth RL and Hoyland Vikings are popular community clubs and we took a bus full to watch our hero Victor Radley (his Dad’s from Barnsley) at last year’s World Cup.
“My dream is to organise a bus full of Hunslet Supporters from Barnsley and South Yorkshire to watch Hunslet at Wembley, I can then die a happy man”.
The new Supporters Club is certainly getting behind Dean and the boys. As well as taking out a number of Watson memberships, they have sponsored the match ball for 5 games and Liam Carr for 2024.
Finance Director Phil Hodgson commented “The Club are extremely grateful to John for his support and enthusiasm. He sponsored the suits for our Grand Final winning team in 2014 so let’s hope his involvement is a lucky omen for this season”.
