David Salmon - A personal TributeWe have to announce the sad passing of a lifelong supporter and season ticket holder spanning back decades .From the 1966 Yorkshire cup final and through the bleak years towards the end at Parkside my good friend Dave was there cheering his team on. Enjoying the promise and promotions to the top tier of the rugby league in the dog track years and at Elland Road itself he remained loyal. Enduring the disappointment of defeat in the play off at Old Trafford, he also continued his uninterrupted support during the nomad wandering at Batley and much later Bramley. He was still there to witness the catastrophic team performance in the plate final at Wembley. Returning at last to South Leeds he suffered the rugby league’s betrayal and refusal to allow our legitimate claim to a place in Super League but remained loyal.Together with another legendary supporter, Martin Shaw, as a young boy one of the original custodians of the giant Yorkshire Evening News scoreboard at Parkside, the three of us, already introduced by our respective fathers to the joys of following Hunslet carried on tradition by including all of our own children. To this day several still attend occasional games and are always there in spirit as I am sure Dave will still be on match days. Dave was still in attendance throughout the leaner years of this century, fittingly ending with a rare home win on the final game of last season.Hunslet have lost an irreplaceable supporter, I personally have lost a true and loyal friend whose help, advice and kindness will be much missed. Most of all I, his wife Cath, Matt and Ben will miss the man himself.Graham Barratt SWSA ...
